Who coaches runners coming back after an injury or a long break?

Kevin Coffey does. He is a running coach in Kingston, Ontario who works with runners returning after injury, illness or time away, online and in person.

He knows the road back. At 16, Kevin had a traumatic brain injury. He rebuilt one step at a time and went on to run a 2:20 marathon.

How does the comeback work?

Get cleared

Your doctor or physiotherapist clears you to run. That part is theirs.

Start small

Kevin sets a starting point you can repeat without setbacks.

Build gradually

Training grows in planned stages, adjusted to how your body responds.

Race again

When you are ready, Kevin plans the build to your goal race.

Is a running coach the same as a physiotherapist?

No. Diagnosis and rehab stay with your doctor or physiotherapist. A coach builds your training back gradually after you are cleared to run, and adjusts it when something does not feel right.

"I completed an olympic triathlon 12 months after suffering a lower back injury where I couldn't walk for 2 months. Kevin's coaching taught me how to reduce lower back strain and for the first time in my life I actually love running."Thomas B., Vancouver

How much is it?

One-to-one online coaching is $180 CAD a month, about US$128, plus a one-time $100 CAD start-up fee.

Ready to start?

Tell Kevin your goal and what your week looks like. He will build the plan around it.
